Why this Masterclass works

Over the past few years, Sustinere has supported more than 140 organisations across a wide range of sectors with over 300 carbon footprint assessments. We bring that experience into this Masterclass in a focused and practical way.

The training is built around real methods, real data, and real challenges. It is hands-on and work-oriented, with no ideological framing or abstract theory. The focus is on doing the work properly and using the results in practice.

Carbon footprint data is a decision making tool for your organisation.

It shapes product choices, supplier selection and long term planning.

This Masterclass shows you how to understand and apply it with confidence.

Foundations of Carbon Footprinting & Scope 1-2

A clear introduction to how carbon footprints are structured and where the calculation process begins.

The first part of this session introduces the core elements of organisational carbon accounting and shows participants where to begin. It explains the structure of the GHG Protocol and gives practical guidance on setting boundaries that support consistent work.

The focus is on:

  • Explaining the emission scopes (Scope 1, 2, 3) in plain language
  • understanding how system boundaries shape the results,
  • recognising the role of operational, financial and equity control.

The second part of this session helps participants understand where Scope 1 and 2 emissions originate and how to collect the information needed to calculate them.

The focus is on:

  • identifying typical Scope 1 and 2 sources,
  • understanding the difference between market and location based approach and why both approaches matter,
  • selecting emission factors from credible databases.

The session also covers common data gaps, how to handle missing information and how to improve data quality over time. A short exercise with fictional data helps participants test the concepts in practice.

Scope 3 Accounting

A guided approach to tackling Scope 3 with confidence and understanding what truly shapes your organisation’s footprint.

The second session explains why Scope 3 often forms the largest share of an organisation’s footprint and how to approach it in a structured way. The aim is to help participants move from overwhelming complexity to clear prioritisation.

The focus is on:

  • screening value chain categories and identifying what is relevant,
  • understanding where internal data exists and how to improve it over time,
  • approaching suppliers in a practical and manageable way,
  • exploring key emission factor databases and learning how to select and apply reliable factors.

Participants will learn how to use spend based and activity based methods and will complete a practical screening exercise based on their own organisational context. By discussing real examples and hearing challenges from other companies, participants gain clearer insight and build a stronger, shared understanding of Scope 3. A strong emphasis is placed on understanding emission factor sources, their credibility, and how to use them correctly.

Result Interpretation and Communicating Your Footprint

A focused session on how to present footprint results clearly and communicate them with credibility.

The final session focuses on communication. The aim is to help participants understand the impact and present footprint results in a clear, credible way.

The focus is on:

  • interpreting the results and understanding the meaning behing the numbers,
  • how to compare the results and find benchmarks,
  • what belongs in a GHG inventory report, how to explain assumptions and boundaries, and how to avoid the most common reporting mistakes.

Participants will also receive an introduction to limited assurance and learn what auditors look for when reviewing carbon calculations. The session strengthens communication skills and supports transparent reporting practices.
