Tycroc builds trust with verified EPD

Project Highlights

  • Client: Tycroc
  • Sector: Construction Materials
  • Website: tycroc.com
  • Country: Estonia

  • Service: Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)
  • Service info: Learn more about EPDs
  • Sustinere team: Andra Ainsaar & Taavi Vaasma

  • Why it matters: EPDs are increasingly essential for sales in Scandinavian markets and for meeting tender requirements across Europe
  • Outcome: Verified documentation to support sustainability claims and market access

The context

Tycroc, an Estonian producer of waterproof building boards and underfloor heating systems, saw that market expectations around sustainability were changing. Clients were asking tougher questions. Public tenders increasingly required proof of environmental performance. Even though it wasn’t yet mandatory, the team knew it was time to act.

What we delivered

To meet the demand for transparency, Tycroc approached Sustinere to create an Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) – a third-party verified LCA documents. The project was led by Andra Ainsaar and Taavi Vaasma, who conducted the LCA analysis and supported Tycroc throughout the data collection, external verification, and publication processes.

Tycroc’s request was to cover the entire product portfolio with EPDs – a significant investment for a smaller company – the team worked together to find an optimal path forward. By strategically grouping products into the minimum number of EPDs and ensuring that Tycroc’s customers could easily find the information they need, Sustinere’s team managed to consolidate its entire portfolio into only three EPDs (two of which are still in progress). Furthermore, it was quickly determined that several of Tycroc’s adhesives and sealants were eligible under a pre-existing model EPD developed by the Association of the European Adhesive and Sealant Industry (FEICA) under which Tycroc’s products could also be included.

Adding to the complexity of the project, Tycroc’s production happens outside of Estonia: underfloor heating pipes are made in Germany, and construction boards in China. Thanks to strong supplier relationships and clear communication, the data collection process was smooth and efficient.

The first completed EPD is already in use – published on Tycroc’s website and shared with clients and tendering bodies as a verified proof point of environmental performance.

In their words

“We sensed that expectations were changing. Clients wanted transparency, and tenders required more than just claims.

The process helped us see the full picture of our production and supply chain – and just as importantly, how to communicate that clearly.

We now have more confidence in the data we share. It’s a solid tool that supports our reputation and gives us an advantage where environmental requirements are becoming more important.”

What’s next

Tycroc plans to expand its efforts by evaluating more products and putting greater focus on sustainability communication. The collaboration with Sustinere is expected to continue.
